THE "IDEAL" HIGH RELIEF: PCGS AND CAC

There is not much that I can add to this description that has not already been written about the High Relief double eagle. This is a dream coin for most collectors due to its beauty, size and back story and it is clearly amongst the most popular American coins ever produced.

If I had to pick the perfect grade for this issue it would be MS64+. A properly graded 64+ is nearly as nice as a full gem but without the $50,000-60,000 price tag required to purchase a Flat Rim in PCGS/CAC MS65.

This coin is everything one would wish for in a 64+: it is very frosty, shows nice orange-gold color and has choice surfaces. A few small obverse marks on the left rays seem to be the only thing keeping this lovely piece from a full MS65 grade.

Stacks Bowers sold an NGC/CAC MS64+ Flat Rim High Relief for $35,250 as Lot 13239 in their March 2016 auction.

CAC has approved 49 in MS64 with an unknown number of these in 64+.
