CONDITIONALLY RARE 1877-CC DOUBLE EAGLE

This is a numismatically significant issue as it is the first Type Three double eagle from the Carson City mint. The grade most often seen for the 1877-CC is AU and Uncirculated pieces are scarce with fewer than two to three dozen known, mostly in the MS60 to MS61 range.

This bright, flashy example is well detailed and is characterized by intense lemon-gold color which deepens at the borders. This is one of the few higher grade 1877-CC double eagles not from European sources and it doesn't have the dense "Euro" look seen on these pieces.

The last PCGS MS61 to sell at auction is this same coin which realized $38,188 as Stacks Bowers 2014 ANA: 13265.

The last two nicer 1877-CC twenties to sell at auction (both in PCGS MS62) rwalized well over $60k which seems like an overpay to me.
