CONDITIONALLY SCARCE UNCIRCULATED 1876-CC DOUBLE EAGLE

The 1876-CC is numismatically significant as the final Type Two double eagle produced at the Carson City mint. In terms of its overall rarity, the 1876-CC is among the more available issues of this type from this facility. However, it is scarce in Uncirculated and seldom seen choicer than MS60 to MS61.

This fresh-to-the-market example was recently repatriated from Europe where it had been stored in a vault for decades. It is fully lustrous and free of wear with lovely natural orange-gold coloration seen on the obverse and the reverse. For a coin graded MS60, the surfaces are far less abraded than one might expect and the reverse, by itself, grades at least MS62.

The last PCGS MS60 1876-CC double eagle to sell at auction brought $11,750 as Heritage 11/14: 3632. However, an NGC MS60 more recently realized $12,925 as Heritage 10/15: 3632.

This would make an excellent type coin for the collector seeking a single high grade Type Two double eagle from Carson City.
