LOVELY SLIDER 1871-S DOUBLE EAGLE

The 1871-S is among the more available Type Two double eagles from San Francisco. It is marginally scarce in this higher AU grades but it becomes rare in Uncirculated and it is virtually unavailable above MS62.

I hand-selected this example from a small group of fresh-to-the-market 1871-S double eagles and I liked it better than some MS61 pieces from this source. It is frosty and completely unmolested with dramatic orange-gold color contrasted by deeper hues on the high spots.

No PCGS AU58+ 1871-S double eagle has sold at auction. An NGC AU58 with CAC approval brought $3,760 as Stacks Bowers 1/17: 91548.

A PCGS/CAC MS61 example of this date would cost around $7,000 and I doubt if it would be as choice as this Gem slider.

CAC has approved 41 in AU58/AU58+ with 25 finer.
