UNDERRATED 1871 DOUBLE EAGLE GRADED AU50 BY PCGS/CAC

The lower mintage 1871 double eagle is a scarcer Type Two issue which I have long believed is underrated. It is not often available in the lower AU grades and even less often with enough eye appeal to garner a CAC sticker.

This green-gold example is fresh to the market and it comes from a small group of Type Two double eagles located in Europe. It has typically scuffs on the surfaces but it is well detailed with choice, natural medium color and plenty of remaining luster.

The last PCGS/CAC AU50 1871 double eagle to sell at auction brought a strong $4,847 as Heritage 2014 ANA: 4139; it was an undergraded AU53 to AU55 in an old holder.

CAC has approved 4 in this grade with 14 finer.
