RARE PCGS AU53 1868 DOUBLE EAGLE

The 1868 is the rarest Type Two double eagle from the Philadelphia mint. It is not often seen in the medium AU grades and when it is available, examples tend to come with excessively abraded surfaces.

The obverse of this coin, viewed alone, grades a full AU50 with good luster, limited marks and excellent overall detail. The reverse is a bit less choice due to the presence of some typical marks seen in the fields. Both sides show pleasing natural medium green-gold color with underlying splashes of rose.

Only one PCGS AU53 1868 double eagle has sold at auction since 2008 and it realized $8,813 as Heritage 6/15: 4344. An NGC AU53, with CAC approval, sold more recently as Stacks Bowers 2016 ANA: 2450 where it was bid up to $7,638.

This is the best available quality for this rare and popular date at less than $10,000.
