RARE COLLECTOR QUALITY 1864 DOUBLE EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL
This popular Civil War issue tends to either come very ratty or very nice and it is almost never seen in the popular, more affordable collector grades. And on the few occasions in which a collector is given a shot at, say, an AU50, these coins are almost never choice with original coloration.
This is a very "meaty" example with enough luster and "pop" to grade AU53 or even AU55. The grade is limited by some obverse scuffs including a long, shallow one in the right field. There is very little actual wear and the color is a pleasing natural russet-gold.
Only one PCGS AU50 1864 double eagle has sold at auction since late 2013 and it brought $11,750 as Heritage 9/16: 5750. An inferior quality NGC AU50 sold for $7,638 as Heritage 2014 ANA: 4115.
This is one of the nicest 1864 double eagles I have seen in an AU50 holder.
CAC has approved 3 in this grade with 26 finer.
