RARE AND POPULAR 1863 DOUBLE EAGLE GRADED PCGS AU53
The 1863 is the second toughest Philadelphia Civil War double eagle after the 1862 and it is the third rarest Type One issue from this facility. It is seen from time to time in the lower AU grades and it becomes scarce and expensive in the higher range of this grade.
This fresh-to-the-market example is one of the few 1863 double eagles I have seen in some time which hasn't been over-scrubbed. It is lustrous with natural green-gold and russet shadings over moderately abraded surfaces. If it weren't for a thin V-shaped scrape over the date, this coin would almost certainly have graded AU55.
Only one PCGS AU53 1863 double eagle has sold at auction since June 2008 and it brought $11,750 as Heritage 6/14: 4912.
This issue is in strong demand by Civil War gold collectors and Type One double eagle specialists.
