POPULAR 1861 DOUBLE EAGLE IN PCGS MS61

The 1861 is far and away the most available Philadelphia double eagle struck during the Civil War. It is sometimes available in the MS60 to MS62 range and such pieces are popular with date and type collectors alike.

When this date comes nice, it is among the most handsome issues of this entire design and this specific example is really nice. It is undipped and frosty without the often-seen mint-made basining lines in the fields and natural soft orange-gold color. An area of abrasions above and to the right of the final 1 in the date limit an otherwise plausible higher grade.

Three PCGS MS61 examples without CAC approval sold at auction in 2016 and these realized $4,700, $4,700 and $4,935, respectively.

I have seen nice AU58 1861 double eagles sell in the low to mid-4k range which makes this nice MS61 a good vaalue at less than $5,000.
