VERY ATTRACTIVE SSCA 1856-S DOUBLE EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL

Variety 17F, SSCA #5281

The 1856-S is the second most frequently seen double eagle from the S.S. Central America wreck and it presents an interesting alternative to the ubiquitous 1857-S.

There is seemingly no wear on this coin and it is visually similar to pieces seen in MS62 or even MS63 holders. It is bright, frosty and well-defined with some splashes of amber-hued toning at the obverse border and lighter hues on the reverse.

The last PCGS AU58 shipwreck 1856-S double eagle to sell at auction was a non-CAC example which had "turned" in the holder; it still brought $5,250 as DLRC 5/16: 1289.

This visually stunning coin is in the original gold-foil holder but it does not include the COA or original box of issue.

For this variety, CAC has approved 23 in AU58 and 12 finer.
