POPULAR 1852 DOUBLE EAGLE GRADED MS61 BY PCGS.
Normal Date variety.
The 1852 is among the more available Type One double eagles from the Philadelphia mint but it becomes scarce in the lower Uncirculated grades, very scarce in MS62 and rare in MS63 and above.
This frosty orange-gold example is fresh to the market and was recently found in Europe. It is well struck with light abrasions and would likely have graded MS62 were it not for a shallow scrape on the lower portion of Liberty's throat. The overall eye appeal is excellent.
Two MS61 examples of this date sold in the Heritage 2017 FUN auction. A scuffy, low end PCGS coin went cheaply at $6,169 while a choicer NGC coin went for a more realistic $7,638.
This would make an ideal type coin for the collector who wants a high grade Type One which is not from a shipwreck.
