RARE AND VERY CHOICE PCGS/CAC MS64 1906-O EAGLE

The 1906-O is the last eagle made at the New Orleans mint and it is the third rarest of the “short set” dates produced intermittently from 1888 to 1906. The 1906-O is scarce in MS63 and rare in MS64. A few Gems exist and these are in tightly-held collections.

I have been fortunate to offer a number of outstanding 1906-O eagles over the last few years and this is among the best. In fact, I sold a PCGS MS65 earlier this year which I didn’t like as much as I do this coin. It is naturally bright with lovely gentle orange-gold hues and very choice surfaces. Were it not for a few ticks in the left obverse field and a well-hidden contact mark in Liberty’s hair I think this would have been a “slam dunk” to grade MS65.

Stacks Bowers sold a PCGS MS64 for $9,400 in their 2/17 auction which wasn’t CAC approved and which, in my opinion, wasn’t even close to the present coin in terms of appearance.

This is an exceptional coin for the date and the grade and it would fit comfortably in even the finest set of New Orleans eagles.

CAC has approved 5 in MS64 with 2 finer (both MS65).
