CONDITION CENSUS PCGS MS62 1889 EAGLE
With a mintage of just 4,400 business strikes, the 1889 is the rarest Liberty Head eagle struck at the Philadelphia mint after 1877. There are a few dozen known in Uncirculated, mostly in the MS60 to MS61 range and properly graded MS62 1889 eagles are rare. I have not seen one finer although a single MS63 shows in the NGC population figures.
This is by far the finest 1889 eagle I have owned. Unlike nearly all of its counterparts, the surfaces are not marred by numerous detracting abrasions and the slightly reflective fields are unusual as well as most 1889 eagles are frosty. Both sides are finely detailed and show pleasing light orange-gold and rose hues.
The only PCGS MS62 1889 eagle to sell at auction since 2007 went cheaply at $5,463 but, in my opinion, this piece was overgraded by a full point.
This piece is tied with seven others as the finest business strike seen by PCGS and I doubt if a finer example will show up any time soon.
