RARE PCGS/CAC EF45 1879-CC EAGLE
Only 1,762 1879-CC eagles were made and this is the lowest mintage figure for any gold coin made at the Carson City mint. While the 1870-CC is the most sought-after eagle from this mint, a compelling case can be made for calling the 1879-CC the rarest.
This piece is well made for the issue with enough detail and luster below medium golden color to suggest a slightly higher grade. The surfaces show some scattered marks but these are not as detracting as usually seen on this date. This is one of the nicer EF graded 1879-CC eagles I have seen or sold.
Only two EF45 1879-CC eagles have sold at auction since March 2009 and one of these (exHeritage 1/16: 5623) still sold for $27,025 in spite of a severe cut on the obverse which could have easily been enough for "No Grade" status.
This date almost never comes up for sale with good eye appeal and if you are working on a set of CC eagles you know how important this coin is.
CAC has approved four in this grade with two finer.
