RARE 1866 EAGLE

The 1866 eagle is a numismatically significant issue as it is the first Liberty Head eagle from the Philadelphia mint to sport the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on the reverse. Only 3,750 were made and it is estimated that 75 or so exist today with many in the VF-EF range. When available, this issue is usually color-free and heavily abraded.

This example is "meaty" for the grade with the detail of a 45 coin but it shows a few too many small, shallow circulation ticks to grade as such. Both sides show some medium range-gold color and a hint of luster can be seen in the recesses.

The last PCGS EF40 1866 eagle sold at auction brought $4,113 as Heritage 10/12: 6036.

For a reasonable price, here is the chance to acquire a legitimately scarce issue.
