RARE 1865 EAGLE

This popular Civil War issue has a mintage of just 3,980 of which an estimated 50 or so are known, mostly in lower grades. I rate the 1865 as the second rarest Philadelphia Civil War eagle after the 1863 and just eclipsing the better-known 1864.

Detail-wise, this coin is close to EF40 but it shows weakness of strike at the central obverse which was mistaken for wear by PCGS. Light green-gold color covers surfaces which are abraded but not abused.

No PCGS VF30 1865 eagle has ever sold at auction. Heritage 2/12: 4893--graded VF25 by PCGS--sold cheaply at $4,313 but was characterized by rough, abraded surfaces.

This may be the most affordable decent-looking 1865 eagle available to collectors.
