SCARCE 1856-O EAGLE

Just 14,500 were struck and the 1856-O eagle is comparable in rarity to dates such as the 1849-O, 1855-O and 1857-O. Affordable collector grade pieces are seldom available.

I believe this coin should grade EF45 but it seems that PCGS has mistaken the reverse weakness of strike for wear. Both sides show more luster than normal for the EF40 grade.

Only two PCGS EF40 1856-O eagles have sold at auction since 1995: this coin in 2016 for $2,233 and a nice OGH example that brought a strong $4,465 as Heritage 9/16: 4838.
