VERY CHOICE PCGS/CAC EF45 1838 EAGLE
The 1838 is one of the most in-demand Liberty Head eagles. It is a low mintage first-year-of-issue with fewer than 100 know from the original mintage of 7,200 and choice, problem-free examples in collector grades are extremely scarce as most seen in VF and EF holders are exceedingly low end.
This fresh-to-the-market example is the single nicest EF-graded 1838 eagle I can recall seeing. It has remarkably clean surfaces below even natural olive-gold color; some deeper reddish hues can be seen at the upper reverse periphery. You could search for years and not find a nicer 1838 eagle in this grade range.
Three PCGS EF45 1838 eagles have sold at auction since 2011. The last APR was $9,400 for Heritage 10/16: 3322 but this coin was very low end and the last nice PCGS EF45 brought $10,925 as Stacks Bowers 2011: 9543. No CAC approved EF45 has ever sold.
This is a coin that has everything going for it and if you have been searching for a nice 1838 eagle, you are well aware of the significance of this offering.
CAC has approved three in this grade with two finer (AU53 and AU58).
