NEWLY DISCOVERED CONDITION CENSUS 1850-D GOLD DOLLAR, PCGS/CAC MS62
Variety 1-A.
There are fewer than 10 Uncirculated 1850-D gold dollars known, the finest of which is likely the ex Duke's Creek NGC MS64 (also graded MS63 by PCGS) which realized $34,500 in Heritage's April 2006 auction. This record price for the date was recently equaled by an NGC MS63 example offered as Heritage 9/16: 13923.
This fresh-to-the-market example is the best 1850-D gold dollar that I have owned in a decade or more. The obverse is just superb and grades at least MS63 with silky mint luster seen below natural golden-yellow color. The reverse shows a small dig to the right of the 1 in the value which, no doubt, forced PCGS to grade this coin MS62 instead of an otherwise-deserved MS63 or even finer.
No PCGS MS62 1850-D gold dollars have sold at auction since the Bass II: 40 coin sold for $12,650 all the way back in October, 1999.
This new discovery is among the more important Dahlonega gold dollars that I have offered since my sale of the fantastic Vasquez Rocks collection three years ago.
CAC has approved this 1 coin in MS62 and 1 finer (MS63).
