VERY CHOICE PCGS MS62 1893-CC DOUBLE EAGLE
A total of just 18,402 1893-CC double eagles were made and this date is numismatically significant as the final operational year for this mint as a coinage facility. This date saw little circulation and most were either melted or shipped loose in bags to Europe. The 1893-CC is rarely seen in grades above MS61 to MS62 and most survivors are either heavily abraded or they show an abundance of copper spotting.
This slightly reflective example doesn't have the typically-seen "Euro" look and it shows very few marks beneath lovely yellow-gold and medium orange splashes on both sides. I tried this coin at PCGS a number of times for a 62+ grade as it is much cleaner and more wholesome than most 1893-CC twenties graded MS62. As you can see, I was thwarted in my attempts.
There are seven auction records for PCGS MS62 1893-CC double eagles between the beginning of 2015 and today and these range from a low of $15,863 to a high of $21,150 with an average sales price of $18,464.
If you can find a PCGS MS63 example of this date, you'll pay in excess of $40,000 and probably won't see a significant difference versus the present piece.
