OGH/CAC 1864-S DOUBLE EAGLE

Housed in an old green label holder and easily an AU50 to AU53 by today's standards.

The 1864-S is a popular Civil War double eagle whose rarity has been altered by shipwrecks. It is no longer scarce in circulated grades but most collector quality pieces lack good eye appeal.

This piece is crusty and original with lovely deep russet color slightly accentuated by overlaid deeper hues. The fields are way cleaner than usual with no detracting marks.

A less choice PCGS OGH 1864-S double eagle without CAC approval sold for $2,585 as Stacks Bowers 3/16: 14341.

CAC has approved 19 in this grade with 52 finer.
