SCARCE AND VERY POPULAR PCGS/CAC AU50 1863 DOUBLE EAGLE
This is the second scarcest Civil War double eagle from Philadelphia after the 1862. The 1863 has become very expensive in the higher AU and lower Uncirculated grades and this has cause demand for nice collector quality pieces to dramatically spike upwards.
This fresh-to-the-market example is very “meaty” for the assigned grade and it has enough luster and detail to suggest an AU53 or even an AU55. It shows natural russet color with some deeper reddish hues (not spots) on the portrait. The surfaces are remarkably clean with an almost total absence of the marks which characterize this issue.
Only one PCGS AU50 1863 double eagle has sold at auction since July 2008 and it realized $10,575 as Heritage 2014 ANA: 4110. This coin wasn’t choice and lacked CAC approval. Only one PCGS AU53 has sold—as well—since July 2008.
I’ve handled a number of nice 1863 double eagles in the last few years and this piece should sell as quickly as the others.
CAC has approved 2 in this grade with 24 finer.
