CHOICE AU 1859-S DOUBLE EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL
The 1859-S is a date whose rarity profile hasn't been radically changed by shipwrecks. It remains scarce in properly graded AU55 to AU58 and it is a rare and pricey issue in Uncirculated.
This is a nice example for the grade with a considerable amount of soft, satiny luster seen beneath natural rose and light golden hues. The surfaces lack the usual deep, detracting marks and the strike is around average for the issue with incomplete detail seen on the hair curls.
The last NGC/CAC AU55 1859-S double eagle to sell at auction realized $3,525 as Heritage 2/16: 4363; it sold cheaply due to a large black spot on the obverse.
CAC has approved 26 in this grade with 20 finer.
