CHOICE 1857-O DOUBLE EAGLE IN AN OLD GREEN LABEL HOLDER
Housed in an old green label holder; in my opinion this coin grades at least EF40 if not better by today's standards.
The 1857-O is comparable in rarity to the 1858-O in the formidable Type One New Orleans double eagle date run. The 1857-O is extremely hard to find in collector grades with choice surfaces and natural color.
This is a delightful, wholly natural example with warm orange-gold color which deepens to a rich reddish-gold at the peripheries. There is luster within the recesses and devices and the surfaces are remarkably clean for this issue which is usually excessively abraded. The eye appeal that this coin shows rivals that seen on any lower grade 1857-O double eagle I can recall.
No PCGS VF35 1857-O double eagle has ever sold at auction. In my opinion, the present example is far choicer than the OGH PCGS EF40 which sold for $10,281 as Stacks Bowers 5/15: 77.
If you have been searching for a comparatively affordable example of this scarce date, you will never find a prettier piece than this!
CAC has approved 1 in this grade with 18 finer.
