VERY CHOICE AU53 1850 DOUBLE EAGLE

The 1850 is a numismatically significant issue as the first regular issue double eagle to be produced at the Philadelphia mint. It is not scarce in the middle range of AU but most examples I see have been scrubbed and have no character.

This is a completely natural coin with very pleasing deep orange and green hues atop surfaces with a good deal of underlying mint luster. The fields are lightly abraded with no marks which are deep or detracting.I have seen numerous AU55 examples of this date with less eye appeal than on this piece.

The last PCGS/CAC AU53 1850 double eagle to sell at auction brought $5,288 as Heritage 9/14: 3465 and it wasn't as nice as the present coin.

Even if you don't collect this series, the 1850 is such a historically significant double eagle that it deserves a place in your collection.

CAC has approved 29 in this grade with 56 finer.
