RARE PCGS AU55 1870 EAGLE

Despite a low mintage of 3,990 business strikes, the 1870 eagle is underrated when compared to the low mintage issues from the 1860's. There are an estimated 75-85 pieces known and this date is rare in properly graded AU55. The best I am aware of is small group of AU58's and I have only seen one (an NGC MS60) with claims to full Uncirculated.

I believe this coin grades AU58 and it compares favorably to the few AU58s which I have seen of this date. It is very lustrous and shows fewer marks than normal with attractive medium orange-gold color covering lightly worn surfaces. A small copper spot on Liberty's chin is mint-made and quickly identifies this coin.

The last PCGS AU55 1870 eagle to sell at auction is this exact coin; see the pedigree below for more information.

There are fewer truly undervalued issues in the With Motto Liberty Head eagle series than there used to be but I feel that the 1870 still qualifies as such.

Ex Heritage 9/16: 14233 where it sold for $7,344.
