ONE OF THE FINEST KNOWN 1860-D GOLD DOLLARS

Variety 12-P.

Only 1,566 were struck and the 1860-D is the third rarest Dahlonega gold dollar after the 1861-D and the 1856-D. This date is very rare in Uncirculated with just seven or eight known, the finest of which is the NGC MS64/PCGS MS63 Dukes Creek coin which holds the auction record for this date at $57,500.

As on all known 1860-D dollars, this piece is characterized by a flat U in UNITED (this obverse was also used to make the 1861-D dollars) and weakness at the borders on both sides. The surfaces are lustrous and show rich orange-gold color; a few small ticks can be seen at the upper central reverse.

The other known PCGS MS62 1860-D dollar was last sold in January 2004 as Lot 1013 in the Green Pond collection auction and it brought $27,600.

This coin appears to be tied for second finest known for the date and it represents an extremely important opportunity for the advanced Dahlonega gold dollar specialist.

CAC has approved two in MS62 with none finer.

Last sold by DWN as part of the Vasquez Rocks collection in late 2013
