RARE AND POPULAR PCGS AU58 1864 DOUBLE EAGLE

The five Philadelphia double eagles struck during the Civil War range from common (1861) to rare (1862). The 1864 is the third scarcest of these and it is not often seen in grades higher than AU53 to AU55.

This gem slider has the appearance of an MS61 and it shows no real wear. There is enough friction in the left obverse field to remove it from the Uncirculated range but it has appealing, uncommonly clean surfaces which lack the usual deep marks and scuffs. There are a few small rim marks at 12:00 which are barely noticeable and which most dealers would fail to mention.

Two PCGS AU58 1864 double eagles were sold by Stacks Bowers in their March 2016 auction. An example without a CAC sticker realized $17,625 while a lower-quality piece which did sport a CAC sticker brought $17,038.

An important coin with multiple levels of demand.
