RARE AU55 1864 DOUBLE EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL

Eureka Hoard

The popular 1864 is the third scarcest Civil War double eagle from Philadelphia after the 1862 and the 1863. It is very scarce in properly graded AU55 to AU58 grades and most seen in this range have been processed or lightened. Examples with deep, natural color are almost never seen.

This piece, repatriated from overseas, is notable for its deep russet hues blanketing choice, lustrous surfaces. The appearance is classic "Euro" with deeper highlights on the relief details. There is no spotting or rim marks and the eye appeal is exceptional for the date and grade.

A non-CAC NGC AU55 which had clearly been dipped, sold for $10,869 as Stacks Bowers 10/15: 10869.

This date is almost never seen in grades higher than this and the present piece is nice enough for almost any Type One or Civil War set.

CAC has approved six in this grade with 12 finer.
