RARE 1853-O DOUBLE EAGLE
Housed in an old green label holder and, in my opinion, an AU50 to AU53 by today's standards.
The 1851-O and 1852-O are clearly the most available double eagles from this mint, followed by the 1850-O. Then comes the 1853-O which is scarce in the EF grades and rare in AU50 and above.
This choice example traces its origin from a mysterious European hoard which hit the market in the early to mid-1990's. The coins from this group are notable for their deep, natural color and most have been broken out of their original holders and upgraded to reflect today's standards. This specific piece shows very nice natural golden-green and orange shades with underlying luster and choice surfaces. As a date, the 1853-O is seldom seen with this sort of appearance.
No CAC EF45 example of this date has sold at auction. The last PCGS AU50 with CAC approval to sell at auction brought $11,750 as Heritage 2014 FUN: 7026.
If you collect this series by date, you likely need a nice 1853-O and if you need a nice 1853-O you'll find it hard to locate a better one than this.
CAC has approved five in this grade with 17 finer.
