RARE CHOICE AU 1870-S EAGLE
Only 8,000 1870-S eagles were struck and there are fewer than 100 known, mostly in the VF-EF grade range. This date is very scarce in AU and it remains unique in Uncirculated with the only one known a PCGS MS61 which is ex Bass/Eliasberg.
This example shows more than enough soft, frosty luster to justify its assigned grade and the surfaces are less abraded than normal for the issue. The strike is sharp with the only weakness seen on the curls beneath TY in LIBERTY.
There is just one coin graded AU55 by either service which has sold since late 2010; graded by NGC, a very low-end 1870-S eagle realized $5,319 as Heritage 4/12: 26651 and earlier $5,175 as Heritage 2/12: 4905.
This is one of the most undervalued issues in all of the With Motto issues of this type and the 1870-S is almost impossible to locate finer than this.
