CHOICE, ORIGINAL 1868 EAGLE IN PCGS AU53

Only 10,630 1868 eagles were made for circulation with fewer than 200 surviving but, by the rigorous standards of eagles made from 1862 to 1873, this is a comparatively "available" date. The 1868 is usually seen in EF40 to AU53 grades and it is often excessively abraded with bright, unappealing surfaces.

This deep russet example was sourced from Europe and it has never before been offered to collectors. It shows fewer marks than normal and the obverse is especially choice with considerable underlying luster.

No PCGS AU53 1868 eagles have sold at auction since September 2010. A non-CAC NGC AU53 recently brought $2,585 as Heritage 3/16: 4509.

Good value in a series where affordable rarity is becoming difficult to find.
