The 1855-O is one of the scarcer dates in the New Orleans No Motto eagle series. There are slightly more than 100 known from a mintage of 18,000 and when available, the typical 1855-O is found in the VF-EF range.
This moderately worn example shows good overall detail with light green-gold color over lightly abraded surfaces. A hint of luster can be seen in the protected areas and the eye appeal is better than average for the grade.
Only two PCGS EF40 1855-O eagles have crossed the auction block since 2003. One sold for $5,060 in the 7/11 Scotsman sale while the other realized $3,760 in Heritage's March 2013 sale.
It has been well over a year since I last offered an 1855-O eagle in a collector grade.
