CHOICE 1854-O LARGE DATE EAGLE IN AN OLD HOLDER

Large Date variety (designated by PCGS); housed in an old green holder and in my opinion at least an AU55 by today’s standards.

Varieties of 1854-O eagle are known with a Small Date and a Large Date. The latter is slightly more available but it is scarce in the mid-AU grades and rare above this. Most have been dipped and those with natural color are very hard to locate.

This coin comes from an important hoard of No Motto U.S. gold which entered the market over 20 years ago.  It has ample remaining luster below attractive natural green-gold color which is exactly “right” for this specific issue. Interestingly, the reverse is struck well out of rotation; far more so than I have seen on any New Orleans eagle.

This coin has all the “bells and whistles” that a sophisticated collector of New Orleans eagles could hope for and I trust it will remain in its old PCGS holder for another few decades.

CAC has approved two in AU50 with 18 finer.
