BORDERLINE GEM 1856 QUARTER EAGLE

The 1856 quarter eagle is common in grades up to MS63. It is scarce in properly graded MS64 and rare above this. Most of the examples I have seen in MS64 holders were not CAC-quality.

This fresh, frosty example is well struck from lightly clashed dies. Both sides are modestly scuffed and show nice natural orange-gold coloration.

The last PCGS MS64 1856 quarter eagle to sell at auction brought $2,938 as Heritage 1/13: 6904.

Unless you are working on a world-class set of Liberty Head quarter eagles (and if you are, please introduce yourself to me immediately!) this 1856 represents the best available quality.

CAC has approved 4 in this grade with 3 finer.
