VERY RARE CONDITION CENSUS PCGS/CAC AU58 1846-D/D QUARTER EAGLE
Variety 7-K; early die state of the "D Near D" reverse.
In terms of numbers known, the 1846-D/D is among the very rarest quarter eagles from the Dahlonega mint. There are probably fewer than 20 known and most are in the EF40 to AU50 grade range. In AU58, this variety is very rare and I know of just one finer: the PCGS MS61 in the Auraria collection (ex DWN) which was originally sold as Bass II: 382.
This example is completely fresh to the market and it is by far the nicest of the four PCGS AU58's which I have handled. I could easily see this coin in an MS61 holder as it shows no real wear and the surfaces are frosty with rich natural green-gold hues which change to reddish-orange at the borders. The first mintmark punch is easily visible under 5x magnification and the diagnostic clashmarks and reverse cracks show clearly.
Stacks Bowers 2015 ANA: 10186, graded AU58 by PCGS, sold for $7,638 and it was not nearly as nice as the present example. A PCGS/CAC AU58 realized $8,625 as Heritage 2008 FUN: 3845 and, again, it paled when compared to this coin.
A wonderful quarter eagle for the advanced Dahlonega gold collector.
CAC has approved three in this grade with none finer.
