Coin Description

CHOICE AU 1849-D GOLD DOLLAR

The first-year-of-issue 1849-D is far and away the most available gold dollar struck at the Dahlonega mint. It has become relatively hard to locate in AU58 and many of the pieces I see inn 58 holders are just awful with zero originality and inferior eye appeal.

This is a well-detailed, lustrous example with pleasing natural color which is more noticeable on the obverse than on the reverse. There are a few light scratches on the obverse in the lower left field which are faint and likely very old.

The last PCGS AU58 to sell at auction brought $3,680 as Bowers and Merena 2/10: 3549.

This is an affordable yet clearly above-average example of a numismatically significant Dahlonega issue.
