GEM OGH/GOLD CAC 1840 QUARTER

In my opinion, 1840 represents one of the most numismatically interesting years in the history of American coinage. The silver coinage of this date—which includes the half dime, dime, quarter and half dollars and the silver dollar—features No Drapery and With Drapery varieites for the half dimes, dimes and quarters as well as Small and Medium Letters half dollars.

The 1840 quarter is quite common in all circulated grades but it is scarce in MS60 through MS62. It becomes rare in MS63 and it is exceedingly rare in MS65 with a current PCGS population of just two in this grade and none finer. The last auction record for an 1840 quarter is back in May, 2002. The single finest known is the PCGS MS64 in a rattler holder that sold for a record-setting $34,500 as Heritage 5/2008: 309.

The coin I am offering here is likely the second or third finest known 1840. I grade it a very solid MS64 to MS64+ and it is the sole 1840 quarter in any MS grade with a Gold CAC sticker. The obverse is very choice with a silvery upper portion which is beautifully offset by iridescent russet which dominates the middle and lower portions; the reverse is a more subdued silvery grey with flecks of russet. There is a good amount of underlying luster and even with a 5x glass, I c an see only a few tiny marks.

This is an outstanding coin in every respect!
