PCGS/CAC AU58 1841-C QUARTER EAGLE

I am constantly amazed by the CAC populations of certain quarter eagles. Many of these head-scratchers are confusing due to low overall numbers but on occasions, more examples of a number of dates exist with CAC approval than I expect.

As I was doing my research on the 1841-C, I was surprised to see that 27 examples in total have been stickered with no less than seven in AU55 and six in AU58.

DWN has been a market-maker in branch mint gold since the mid-1980s and in this 40+ year period, I have handled virtually every nice Charlotte quarter eagle which has come to market. I haven’t seen more than a single Uncirculated 1841-C—a PCGS MS62 that bounced around about twenty year ago; selling three time times between May 2006 and May 2007. And the scant number of PCGS AU58 examples that have sold at auction in the past decade—just five APRs are noted in this period with none of these for a CAC approved AU58 from either service—suggest that the CAC numbers may, in fact, be infltaed by resubmissions.

This coin shows the best strike I can recall having seen on any 1841-C $2.50. There are a few marks in the right obverse field that I wish were not there but which you will likely come to tolerate. Both sides show good luster below some medium orange-gold color.

If you collect this series, it is almost a certainty that you either need this date or it represents a serious upgrade.

Our database ,which goes back 10+ years, shows that we have handled five CAC approved AU58 1841-C quarter eagles, as follows:

(4) PCGS/CAC including this coin for the second time and (1) NGC/CAC.

We have sold only one coin finer, a PCGS MS62 non-CAC.

CAC has approved six in AU58 with none finer.
