RARE AND UNDERAPPRECIATED 1907 LIBERTY HEAD $10.00

GRADED PR64 CAM BY PCGS AND APPROVED BY CAC

The final year of issue for a type which was first produced in 1866.

With only 74 coins struck, the 1907 has the lowest mintage figure of any of the 20th century Liberty Head eagles. It is estimated that around 35-45 are known today, with most survivors in the PR64 to PR65 range. Examples that have been designated as being Cameo or Deep Cameo are very unusual, as most of the 20th century Liberty Head eagles are seen with little or no contrast. In fact, no Proof 1907 Liberty $10 has ever been designated as being a Deep Cameo by PCGS.

This is a choice, high-end, borderline Gem with deep watery fields. A few wispy lines can be seen on the obverse and this narrowly knocks this coin from the Gem classification. There are no spots or noticeable marks on either side.

As the flowing chart shows, many observers of the Proof gold market believe that the Liberty Head eagle series is much undervalued when compared to its counterpart, the Liberty Head double eagle. Let’s do the PCGS numbers:

DATE/DENOM # GRADED IN 64
AND HIGHER
PCGS PRICE
GUIDE 64/65
CDN BID
64/65
1907 $10.00 18/15 (T: 59) $47,500/$87,500 $24,000/$46,000
1907 $20.00 23/13 (T: 60) $115,000/$200,000 $75,000/$140,000
NOTE: CDN prices are for non-CAC coins. Add around 30% for CAC stickered coins. PCGS prices are for coins with a CAM designation.

As this chart shows, the difference in rarity between the $10 and the $20 is minimal. Prices for PR63 and finer Liberty Head double eagles have increased markedly in the last five years, while the smaller Liberty Head eagles have shown some price increases, but not enough in my opinion. If a nice PCGS/CAC PR64 CAM common-date double eagle is worth $100,000 to $120,000, then a similar Liberty Head eagle seems like a no-brainer in the $50,000 to $60,000 range.

For the date, the population is six in PCGS PR64CAM with eight finer (best are four in PR66CAM). The last PR64CAM to sell at auction was back in 2008. Only two PCGS PR65CAM 1907 $10 Libs have sold since 2015, with the most recent being the record-setting Stack’s Bowers 2021 ANA: 4241 coin at $84,000.

At under $40,000, this coin is an amazing value.
