NICE PCGS MS62 1851-D GOLD DOLLAR
This is the second most available gold dollar from Dahlonega after the 1849-D. But while as many as 50-100 exist of the former in all MS grades, it is estimated that only two dozen or so of the 1851-D are known with the majority in the MS60 to MS62 range.
This frosty bright yellow-gold example was struck from strongly clashed dies and as on many 1851-D dollars, there is a single incuse star in front of the U in UNITED on the reverse at 7:00. There are some wispy lines on the obverse and a few small scattered marks consistent to the assigned PCGS grade.
Stack’s Bowers 6/2026: 2209 was graded PCGS/CAC MS62, but in my opinion, it was recolored and enthusiastically graded. It brought $12,810.
With the last sale of a PCGS MS63 occurring in 2023 and with no others since 2016, my advice to Dahlonega type coin collectors is to give some thought to this attractive PCGS 62!
