DESIRABLE AND SCARCE 1841-D $2.50, CAC GOLD STICKER

The 1841-D is among the scarcer quarter eagles from Dahlonega with an estimated 75-95 known from a small mintage of 4,164. This issue is extremely rare in the higher AU and Mint State grades, and the majority of the circulated coins are bright from inappropriate heavy-handed cleaning(s).

This is clearly not the case with this undergraded coin which appears to grade a solid AU50 by today’s standards. Housed in an old green label holder, this coin is notable for its immaculate surfaces which are a pleasing russet-gold hue. Struck from perfect dies and sharply detailed, this coin represents the exact sort of quality that connoisseurs of 100% natural D-mint gold clamor for.

There have been a grand total of 13 Dahlonega quarter eagles that have been awarded a coveted Gold CAC sticker. Remarkably, three are dated 1841-D.
