CONDITION CENSUS 1875-CC EAGLE

An estimated 65-75 examples of the 1875-CC eagles are known in all grades with most in the VF-EF range. AUs are rare, and this properly graded AU55 is about as nice an example as the advanced Carson City specialist is likely to find.

The surfaces are very clean for he issue and are semi-reflective—which is unusual as the few I have seen in higher grades were more frosty in appearance. As on every known 1875-CC eagle, the hair below LIBERTY is weak as is the corresponding area on the reverse. Both sides show attractive light to medium orange-gold color and on the horizontal lines in the shield and on into the left wing feathers there is a mint-made impurity which I don’t find detracting.

While NGC has graded a single example in MS60 (ex Admiral Collection at a record-setting price of $84,000 in 2018), I have never seen a truly Uncirculated 1875-CC. PCGS shows a total of one coin in AU58, sold by Stack’s Bowers for $63,250 in their 2012 ANA auction as part of the famous Battle Born Collection. This exact coin was in the Nevada Collection up through around 2005 when it was sold and rebranded as the Battle Born Collection.

This coin was until recently in a PCGS AU5 holder and the owner cracked it out, thinking it might grade AU58. While I disagree that its a 58, it is an awfully nice example of a date that is almost never seen nice.
