POSSIBLE FINEST KNOWN 1854-D MEDIUM D $5.00, ex Fairmont

Winter 37-CC. Medium D mintmark, as designated by PCGS

There appear to be as few as 20-25 pieces known for the variety with this coin and or two others tied for the highest graded at PCGS. I have seen one of the others PCGS AU58s, and it didn’t compare to this choice example.

This coin would look fine in an MS60 or even an MS61 holder. The color is a lovely even green-gold hue and the surfaces are choice but for an old shallow scrape on the lower portion of the shield.

With a common date Large D 1854-D $5 worth around 12k+ in today’s market, I think the rarity premium I’m asking for is justified.

CAC has approved two in this grade with none finer.

Ex Stack’s Bowers 4/2022: 5071 where I purchased it directly for $13,200.
