RARE C BECHTLER GEORGIA GOLD $5 GRADED MS60 BY PCGS

K-23, High R-5/Low R-6. 126 G, 22 Carats.

Struck between 1834 and 1837, this issue is important to the collector of Dahlonega half eagles which began production in 1838 and which circulated side-by-side for a short period of time. As with any Bechtler issue of this denomination, K-23 is scarce in all grades and it is extremely rare in Uncirculated. I know of just three, and this includes the PCGS MS61 Riverboat coin that sold in 4/2016 for $31,275 and earlier in 4/2014 for $32,900.

This issue is almost never seen with original color and surfaces and the present coin is nicer than nearly very other piece I’ve seen or handled. There are some light scuffs on the left obverse around the DO in DOLLARS. The luster shows a grainy texture—as on most K-23’s—and the overall appearance is way above-average for this issue.

This coin is likely high in the Condition Census for the issue and it represents an important opportunity for the advanced Bechtler specialist.
