POPULAR 1854-S $10 IN PCGS AU58, ex Fairmont

Its status as the first ten dollar gold coin struck at the newly-opened San Francisco mint makes the 1854-S eagle a popular issue amongst collectors. It is common in all circulated grades up through AU58, but it is rare in Uncirculated.

This is an outstanding coin for the date and grade with considerable amount of luster clearly visible beneath rich yellow and orange-gold with some intense reddish-gold at the recesses of the stars and the lettering on the reverse.

In early 2024, a CAC approved PCGS AU58 sold for $9,600, while a non-CAC also in PCGS AU58 brought a very strong $13,200 as Stack’s Bowers 2022 ANA: 3261.
