SCARCE AND POPULAR 1838 EAGLE IN PCGS AU50

Only 7,200 eagles were struck when this denomination was resumed after a 34 year hiatus. Very few were saved, and today there are likely not more than two dozen or so which fit my standards as AU or finer.

This green-gold example shows a generous amount of luster and it has not been vigorously scrubbed as have many 1838 eagles. There are no areas of weakness seen with the exception of the stars which are flat as usual.

Since the start of 2020 there have been only three auction appearances for a PCGS AU50 1838, with the most recent of these occurring in 4/2022 when Stack’s Bowers sold a nice non-CAC piece for $18,000.

This piece is fresh to the market and it represents a lot of coin for the money.
