SCARCE 1844-C HALF EAGLE

Variety 1, die state II.

The 1844-C is the sixth rarest of 24 half eagles from Charlotte. Fewer than 200 are believed known and this date tends to come well-worn as no half eagles were made at the Charlotte mint in 1845 due to a fire which closed this facility.

This is a strictly EF coin which has been net-graded down to VF30 due to signs of an old cleaning. The surfaces have retoned nicely and the reverse has pleasing natural reddish-gold color at the border.

The only PCGS VF30 1844-C half eagle to ever sell at auction brought $2,233 as Heritage 11/13: 4630.

An affordable example of a rare Charlotte half eagle.
