CHOICE AU 1846-D/D HALF EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL

Variety 16-J.

The 1846-D/D is the best known and most visually spectacular variety in the entire Dahlonega half eagle series. It is scarce in the low to mid-AU range but it is quite rare with natural color and choice surfaces.

This is an absolutely exceptional example with a fully natural appearance. Both sides show rich original green-gold hues with splashes of orange-gold. The surfaces are clean while the strike is sharper than usual for this variety. In my opinion, this coin wouldn’t look out of place in an AU55 holder.

No PCGS AU53 1846-D/D half eagles have sold at auction since September 2006 while only one PCGS AU55 has sold since August 2007.

This variety is almost never offered in collector grades and this is an unimprovable piece for the grade and price point.

CAC has approved three in this grade with three finer.
