RARE PCGS MS62 1853 EAGLE

The 1853 eagle is common in circulated grades but it is rare and habitually overlooked in Uncirculated. Most of the 15-20 known in Uncirculated are in the MS60 to MS61 range and properly graded MS62’s are really rare.

This fresh-to-the-market example has the naked-eye appearance of a coin graded MS63 or even MS64. It is bright and wholesome with rich yellow-gold color which is accentuated by light splashes of orange-gold in the obverse fields. There are just a few small areas of chatter, the most notable of which are located in the upper reverse field.

No MS62 1853 eagles from either service have appeared at auction since March 2006 and the last PCGS MS62 to sell at auction realized $5,865 as Heritage 7/03: 10430.

If available, a PCGS MS63 1853 eagle might cost around $15,000. This nice MS62 at around than half this amount seems like great value to me.
